Baton Pass (Japanese: バトンタッチ Baton Touch) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation II. It was TR29 in Pokémon Sword and Shield, and is TM132 in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Effect

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason:
  • Does Baton Pass transfers any of these effects? Nightmare, Encore, Throat Chop, Torment
You can discuss this on the talk page.

Baton Pass switches out the user and passes several effects to the Pokémon switched in its place.

If this is used by a wild Pokémon or a Trainer with no available Pokémon to be switched, it fails but still spends PP.

From Generation II to IV, the animation will always display a normal Poké Ball. Starting in Generation V, the correct type of Poké Ball the user was caught with is displayed in the animation.

The user still switches out even if it was prevented from escaping. Even though the Baton Pass user switches out, Pursuit has no additional power or priority against it. If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Baton Pass, all of the user's lowered stats are reset.

Choosing a Pokémon

As with normally switching out Pokémon, using this move opens up the party screen so the player can choose the replacement Pokémon. It is not possible to choose any Pokémon Eggs, fainted Pokémon, the same Pokémon who used this move, or another Pokémon who is already in battle (such as in a Double Battle).

Once the party screen is open, it is not possible to cancel this move without choosing a replacement Pokémon. In Generations II to IV, the "Cancel" button is still present but is unusable. From Generation III onwards, when choosing the Baton Pass replacement Pokémon, there is an option to see their summary.

The party is not shown when someone else uses this move (such as a non-player character, or another player in a link battle).

Effects passed

Baton Pass transfers all temporary stat stage increases and decreases on to the Pokémon that replaces it in battle. Baton Pass also passes some volatile status conditions, namely confusion, getting pumped, escape prevention, seeding, Curse, Substitute, Ingrain, Power Trick, Heal Block, Embargo, Perish Song, Magnet Rise, and Aqua Ring. It passes Telekinesis, except this effect disappears if the replacement Pokémon is Mega Gengar. It passes Ability suppression, except if the replacement Pokémon's Ability cannot be suppressed.

From Generation II to IV, if the user was enforcing escape prevention on another Pokémon (by means such as Block, Mean Look, or Spider Web), its replacement will keep enforcing it.

As with normally switching out Pokémon, if the user was draining HP from a seeded Pokémon, the replacement will keep draining HP.

Effects not passed

Baton Pass does not pass any effects that require having a certain Ability or holding an item, any non-volatile status conditions (such as sleep or poison), drowsiness (from Yawn or G-Max Snooze), infatuation, center of attention (from Spotlight), type changes, Ability changes, moves learned by Mimic, form changes (including Mega Evolution, Dynamax, etc.), or transformations (from Transform or Imposter). It also does not pass the effects of Disable (even if the replacement Pokémon knows the disabled move), Imprison, or Defense Curl's effect of doubling the power of Rollout or Ice Ball, or the critical hit rate boosts from G-Max Chi Strike.[1] It does not pass Minimize's tiny sprite, or its effect of causing the user to become more vulnerable to some moves (Stomp, Steamroller, Heat Crash, etc.).

From Generation V onwards, if the user was enforcing escape prevention on another Pokémon, its replacement will not enforce it.

Contests

Baton Pass can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining extra three appeal points if a certain move (Agility, Amnesia, Autotomize, Calm Mind, Cotton Guard, Hone Claws, Nasty Plot, Rock Polish, or Shell Smash) was used in the prior turn.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

In Rescue Team, Explorers and Adventure Squad series, Baton Pass targets all other Pokémon in the room and consecutively swaps places with them (assuming it doesn't miss them) in a mostly random order (prioritizing allies before enemies). A Pokémon that stays on a tile they cannot walk on will be warped away.

In Gates to Infinity, the user switches places with a teammate in front, and the switched ally receives a random stat boost; when used by an enemy, they will switch places with another enemy on the floor. In Super Mystery Dungeon, the user now switches with a teammate anywhere on the floor who is ordered first on the team list (or second on the list if the user is listed first).
